Also known as “sea gold,” our natural Mediterranean Silk and Bahamian Wool sea sponges are among the finest in the world.
Our sponges are sustainably harvested by professional divers, who are careful to ensure that the base of the sponge remains intact, putting into motion its natural reproduction. They are then expertly cleaned and cut to bring you a remarkable finished product.
Unlike synthetic sponges and cloths, sea sponges contain enzymes that inhibit the growth of bacteria. They are also softer, more absorbent, and more durable than synthetic sponges, lasting anywhere from a few months to several years with proper care. Free of toxins and hypoallergenic, you can trust our sea sponges to be the healthiest choice for your personal care and cleansing needs.
There are 7 kinds of sea sponges commercially sold today:
- Grass Sea Sponge
- Wool Sea Sponge
- Honeycomb Sea Sponge
- Mediterranean Silk
- Atlantic Silk
- Elephant Ear Sea Sponge
- Vase Sea Sponge
We've chosen to provide only the Mediterranean Silk and Bahamian Wool, because they are the softest and longest lasting for personal care use.
Grass sea sponges are often sold for bathing because they are the cheapest, but many complain of their scratchy texture and the fact that they quickly fall to pieces like blades of grass being separated.
Wool sea sponges are harvested from the Bahamas or coast of Florida and serve as the bathing sponge of choice due to their durability, gentle texture, and ability to hold a ton of water while creating an abundant lather.
Honeycomb sea sponges are similar to Wool and generally priced the same as Wool, but these are actually harvested from the Mediterranean Sea. You may expect that because Honeycomb grows in the Mediterranean that it would be superior in quality, but they have actually been found to be more fragile and no softer than our wonderful Wool.
There are two varieties of the Silk sea sponge, the prime quality coming from the Mediterranean Sea and the lower quality coming from the Atlantic Ocean. Mediterranean Silk have finer pores and a velvety texture, which makes them the go-to for sensitive applications, such as facial, menstrual, or infant bathing. Atlantic Silk are cheaper to obtain and deceptively sold by some companies as the best for these same sensitive applications, but many complain of their scratchy texture and poor grade. Which is why the obvious choice for us was to only sell the premium Silks.
Elephant Ear sea sponges derive their name from their broad, thin shape, much like an elephant ear. They are also quite durable and some use these for cosmetic applications, though they are not as soft as the Silk.
Finally, there are the Vase sea sponges that are used for their decorative qualities. They have a natural vase-like structure and are preferred for holding plants or other household ornaments. Our company is new and ever-expanding, and we hope to soon incorporate these decorative sponges into our product line as well.
